How to Split an Itemized Receipt in HalfHalf

Learn how to scan or enter a receipt, split individual items fairly, and save a clean group expense in HalfHalf.

Some shared bills are easy: one amount, one payer, everyone splits it evenly. Receipts are different. One person had coffee, two people shared fries, someone skipped dessert, and tax or tip still needs to land somewhere fair.

HalfHalf's receipt mode is built for that kind of bill.

1. Open Receipt Mode

In your group, tap the add expense button. Open the expense type selector and choose Receipt. This switches the form from one total amount to itemized receipt lines.

You can enter items, or attach a receipt image and let HalfHalf scan it.

2. Add Or Scan The Receipt

To scan, take a photo or choose an existing image, crop it so the receipt is readable, then run the scan. HalfHalf will turn detected lines into receipt items.

Always check the scanned item names and prices. Receipt scanning saves time, but a quick review keeps the final split trustworthy.

3. Split Each Item

Tap an item to choose who shared it. You can split an item evenly with parts, or enter exact amounts when people paid for different shares. This is helpful when one person ordered a full meal and someone else only shared a side.

For shared extras like tax, service, or tip, use proportional splitting. That spreads the line based on each person's share of the other receipt items, which is usually fairer than splitting it equally.

4. Check The Total

Before saving, make sure the receipt total matches the item total and that each item is fully assigned. HalfHalf will warn you if something does not balance.

5. Save The Expense

When everything looks right, save the receipt. The group balance updates automatically, and everyone can see what they were included in.

Itemized receipts take a little more care than normal expenses, but they are the clearest way to split meals, groceries, trips, and mixed bills without guessing later.
